Advantages of Alanine Dosimetry
Alanine dosimetry is an internationally accepted method for
dose measurements in different radiation fields. Alanine
dosimeters are often used as reference and transfer dosimeters.
In alanine, free radicals (unpaired electrons) are generated by
ionizing radiation (gamma radiation, electrons, neutrons,
charged particles). Because of the crystalline structure, the
recombination of the radicals is limited under normal
conditions. Recombinations of a few percents per year and
hyperfine interactions of the radicals occur at dose values
above 3 kGy. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy is used to
determine the radiation induced radicals in alanine. The
measurement signal is proportional to the dose and the
dosimeter mass. The dose calculation is done by using the
peak-to-peak value of the central line or area below the
measurement signal.
